Expand windows 2008 VM OS drive in VMware

  1. Shutdown the VM
  1. Expand OS vmdk file via Virtual Center (Edit Settings) . Make it the size you want to drive to be.

  1. Configure the VM to boot off w2k8 ISO (CDRM/DVD)

Select Data store ISO file and select the correct ISO. Also make sure to select connect at power on.

Click OK to save your changes

  1. Power on VM

While booting make sure to click in window and when prompted, press any key to boot from CD or DVD (ISO)

  1. Once booted off the ISO, follow the prompts.

Select, repair your computer

Select command prompt

  1. In the command prompt, type the follow commands

>diskpart

>list volume

>select volume 1 ß-Make sure you select the C: drive of the VM

>extend

Close the command prompt by click the X in the corner to close the window

  1. Click shutdown to shut down the VM

  1. Once the VM is shutdown, edit the VM settings to disconnect the CDROM

-uncheck the “Connect at Power on”

-device type should be set to “Client Device”

Click OK to save changes

  1. Power VM back on and verify the size of the drive
