How do you extend an virtual disk on a Dell DAS array?
7:34 PM
The Dell DAS Array will allow for
expansion of an existing RAID array if it has space to assign to any
existing targets apart of the SAME disk group. As such, assuming you
meet these conditions and you have an OS that that supports this mode
(i.e. Windows basic and dynamic disks and Linux) then you can perform
the steps below to extent an existing virtual disk.
- Open the Dell Modular Disk Storage Manager utility and choose the
Logical tab. Right click the virtual disk you want to extent and choose
Increase Capacity. On the informational screen, it will verify what
sort of virtual disks are eligible for extents. Assuming you have an OS
that supports this activity click on OK to continue.
- On the Increase Virtual Disk Capacity screen, enter in the size you
wish to grow the virtual disk. This adds what you specify ot the
current virtual disk. So, if you have a 10 GB virtual disk and add an
additional 10 GB's in this window you will have a new virtual disk
totaling 20 GB's. Click on OK to continue and to extend the virtual
disk.
- Once the space has been grown you will see a screen similar to the
one below. Again, the virtual disk is doing its internal checks and
growing the space. So, you should wait for that process to complete
before again using the volume. This is depicted below in the screen
shot showing the clock on the targeted virtual disk.
