How To configure RAID controller for DAS device

The responsibility of configuring a customer's DAS will fall solely on the service delivery support team assigned to the account. Infrastructure's responsibility will be to ensure that the array controller can see the disks and are installed properly.

Below is an example of configuring a DAS array attached to a BOBJ/SAP server. Please feel free to update or change this page if you are able to provide a more relevant example.


Installation and Configuration

Product: Dell PowerEdge Expandable RAID Controller Config

SCSI Controller Configuration

Version: 6/E
1. Connect to the server ILO address
2. Open Console Viewer
3. Restart the Server and watch for the PowerEdge Expandable RAID Controller BIOS to post
4. Hold <CTRL> and R keys to enter the RAID configuration utility
5. Down Arrow to Controller 1: PERC 6/E Adapter
6. Press Enter
Note (the Controller 0:PERC 6/I is the integrated controller used for the internal HDD RAID configuration)
7. In this case the RAID was already configured and we needed to remove the Virtual Disk and recreate it with a different RAID level
8. Press Enter again to view current RAID settings
9. Current RAID settings were RAID-6 with 64KB Stripe Set
10. Press ESC to go back to previous screen
11. Highlight the Virtual Disk 0
12. Press F2 - Operations
13. Select Delete Virtual Disk
14. Press Enter

15. The new 'empty' configuration will appear
16. Press Enter to configure it
17. The RAID Level will first be highlighted
18. Press Enter and scroll down to the RAID level you wish to configure (10 in this case)
19. Enter 12 for PD per Span (Physical Disks per Span) as there are 24 drives in this DAS
20. Arrow down through the disks and push SPACE to select
21. You will notice that 12 drives will be used for SPN 0 and 12 drives for SPN 1
22. Arrow key over to Advanced Settings
23. Press SPACE to select
24. Highlight Strip Element Size and press ENTER
25. Select, in this case, 1MB for the Stripe Size
26. Arrow down to Initialize, press SPACE to select
27. User Arrow key to select OK when finished
28. When complete the configuration should look as follows

29. Press ESC to exit the DRAC utility
30. Select Macros from ILO Menu and Ctrl-Alt-Del to reboot the server
